WELCOME!
Tom Lukiwski, Member of Parliament for Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre, announced on May 21 that the federal government and the Town of Regina Beach have reached an agreement for the transfer of the Regina Beach wharf facility.
"I am proud to announce the federal government's transfer of this wharf facility to the Town of Regina Beach. The Town will now have the important job of the wharf's daily maintenance and operations," said MP Lukiwski. "Our government understands the importance of wharfs and small craft harbours to small communities, which is why we have been working closely with them in the past two years to get done what is best for each."
Under the agreement, the federal government will transfer the Regina Beach wharf facility to the Town of Regina Beach, and provide a $210,000 grant to the Town, which will eventually be used to repair or replace the wharf. The Town has agreed to maintain and operate the wharf as a public facility for a minimum of five years.
This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Branch, under the Recreational Harbour Divestiture Program. It is anticipated that the transfer will take place in the next few months.
The Government of Canada understands the importance of small craft harbours to communities across the country. Since February 2006, the permanent annual funding for the Small Craft Harbours Program has been increased by $20 million, with a further $10 million commitment made in Budget 2008 over two years for repairs and environmental cleanup at recreational and non-core fishing harbours to permit the transfer of these harbours to interested parties.
